The Regenerative Building Lab (re ︎ LAB) is a consortium of like-minded researchers and experimenters committed to systemic intervention in (and transformation of) the materials, means, and methods of contemporary construction and the way we conceive, organize, and ultimately materialize the built environment.
Through this shared mission, with pooled resources, and benefitting from the complementarity of differing approaches, varied areas of focus and expertise, and diverse cultural, socioeconomic, political, and bio-regional contexts, we seek to amplify our capacity and agency through transdisciplinary exploration and collective action by:
︎ 1
Conduct joint (bi- and multilateral) research activities that contribute to the broad-based innovation in and adoption of bio-based and circular economic building materials and assemblies in Europe and globally.︎ 2
Co-develop and demonstrate assessment methods that appropriately internalize and weigh the eco-systemic impacts and benefits of material selection and develop and reinforce procurement protocols and trace chains of custody that support safeguards for the protection and promote the restoration of natural systems.︎ 3
Co-develop strategies techniques of building design for disassembly and reuse so as to create credible future life cycle scenarios for adaptation and reuse of buildings, their constituent components and systems, and their materials.︎ 4
Jointly promote, coordinate, and evaluate built pilot projects and broadcast findings and recommendations through industry and governance sectors.︎ 5
Facilitate the inclusion of experts, researchers, practitioners and administrators and other stakeholders throughout Europe and globally to expand the regenerative building knowledge base.︎ 6
Engage in capacity building initiatives to help build necessary knowledge and skill base along the value chain of regionally available material resources, including timber as well as forms of agricultural construction, industrial, and consumer waste and other biobased and low-impact materials in Europe.︎ 7
Catalyse and accelerate novel forms of regenerative social and economic enterprise.︎ 8
Chart feasible pathways to an environmentally restorative and socially inclusive built environment, that incentivize investments in nature, and that promote and sustain a metabolic synergy between human activity and the Earth’s natural systems.Steering group
